Alajos BAY Hungarian Wooded Landscape

Unavailable
This is a fine oil painting on wooden board by the Hungarian artist, Alajos Bay (1864 - 1935). Signed by the artist. Board measures 13" by 19" and the contemporary frame measures 16" by 22". This work depicts a woman seated on a bench in on a wooded path, with sunlight filtered from above through the trees. As you'll find with other works by Bay, here he has used light, shadow and color to create dazzling effects. This work may have been completed in the village of Szentendre just north of Budapest, where Bay was known to have worked around the time that the famous artists' colony was created there. Szentendre is often referred to as the "Montmartre of the Danube" for its reputation as a center for fine art. This work carries the stamped mark of the Magyar Nemzeti Galeria, the National Gallery of Hungary in Budapest, indicating it was authenticated there for the purpose of export from Hungary as required by Hungarian law. This is one of three Antal Bay paintings we currently have for sale.

He also exhibited in 1930 and 1932 at la Biennale di Venezia (the Venice Biennial) international art exhibition.
