Vintage Moroccan Rug

This exemplary Moroccan rug showcases a fantastic variety of carpet weaving techniques and ancient protection symbols based on long-standing superstitions that create an experimental yet traditional result. The striped background features flat-woven bands of ivory and walnut brown with a tufted latticework grid superimposed over the rustic field. Each graphic linear motif features a variety of polychromatic red, white and blue stripes. These classic colors appear again in the checkered lozenges, goz symbols and family signs that decorate each isolated cell. Tiny hash marks and subtle chevron details embellish the outlines of each striped segment. Created in Morocco circa 1950, this charming Moroccan rug is modern and experimental while retaining important protection symbols that are part of ancient cultural traditions.
