Born August 12, 1912 in Brussels, Belgium, Roger Hebbelinck started working with watercolors as a young boy. At sixteen he printed etchings in the studio of the famous artist, Van Santen. It is here that he learned etching techniques by day and attended classes at the Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels in the evening. Hebbelinck also worked as an oil and landscape painter, watercolorist, and filmmaker and taught watercolor, painting and engraving at the Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels. As a filmmaker, Hebbelinck won a prize at the Cannes Film Festival for his documentary La Naissance d'une Eau-forte.
