This unusual solid mahogany table is from the late 1800’s and is generally referred to as a library table or writing desk. The carvings on this desk are exceptional. Notice the deeply carved band along the outside of the table top. In addition, all 4 sides of the table skirt are intricately carved as well. Each long side has one full length hand dovetailed drawer next to a faux drawer front. Even the handles are heavily carved. Now check out the base – wow! At each corner is a standing, three dimensional, fully carved griffon or winged lion. The roaring faces, feathered wings, curling tail and paw feet are wonderfully executed. They rest on a shaped platform base. The desk retains its original recessed casters. The finish is original, having a very deep, rich color and patina. The top has some scratches, rubs and small cigarette looking burns which is to be expected. These do not detract from the desk’s commanding presence.
