Hand Carved Ivory - VERY RARE SET of an EMPEROR & EMPRESS with DRIVERS in HORSE DRAWN CHARIOTS - 16 POUNDS! This is a set of an Emperor and Empress in horse driven chariots with drivers. The detail on this regal pair is absolutely amazing. The Emperor holds a bow in his outstretched right hand as though just having released an arrow and his left hand is clutching a quiver full of arrows hanging on his left side. An elaborate sword hangs from his right side and a foo dog is carved into both the sword and the front of his armor. The Empress holds a bow in her outstretched left hand as though just having released an arrow and her right hand is clutching a quiver full of arrows hanging on her right side. An elaborate sword hangs from her left side and a foo dog is carved into both the sword and the front of her armor. The Foo Dog is the symbol of good fortune, luck and wisdom. Guardians such as these are placed at the entrance of a home, temple, palace, or other building to guard the occupants from evil and harmful spirits. Foo Dogs are the symbols of valor and energy - indispensable compliments of wisdom. Each driver has a whip and is seated in front of the emperor or empress. All three figures have deeply incised armor and the emperor and empress each have two flags on their backs. Please note that the artist has even taken the time to carve the individual teeth on each of the horses. The clothing of the Emperor and Empress and even the apparel on the horses are beautifully and deeply incised. The chariots are also extremely well detailed and decorated. Dragons abound around each chariot. The dragon is the symbol of luck, wealth, good fortune and wisdom. The dragon represents male vigor and fertility and is also the imperial emblem of the Emperor. The dragon is the symbol of the emperor and ranks first amongst the 4 supernatural creatures. The facial features of both the emperor and empress are extremely well detailed and consistent with the theme of this piece. They both have a lovely patina that comes only with age. These pieces are truly substantial. The ivory weighs 16 pounds in total and the ivory measures 15" tall and 18 1/2 inches in width on each piece. These carvings are 100% genuine elephant IVORY and in EXCELLENT CONDITION. They were HAND CARVED and HAND SCRIMSHAWED in China by a gifted master craftsman in the early 1900s. They have a lovely patina that nature has chosen to bestow upon them. These carvings are UNIQUE and exhibit beautiful IVORY GRAIN which is guaranteed to be clearly visible. The ivory has been highly polished and exquisitely detailed. The quality of the ivory, the quality of the carving and the quality of the scrimshaw work are all exceptional. These carvings were legally imported into the USA and can only be shipped to locations within the USA. This gorgeous pair would certainly make a fantastic addition to your collection of fine Asian antiquities and should steadily increase in value over the years.
