Hand Carved Ivory - VERY RARE - Meiji period carving by SHINCHI of a GEISHA holding an open PARASOL - 12 1/4". This superb Japanese ivory and wood lacquered okimono showcases a beautiful geisha with an open parasol. Her kimono and obi are decorated in gold with flowers and leaves and is signed Shinchi on a red lacquer tablet on the underside of the base. She was carved during the Meiji Period (1868 - 1912). The facial features of this lovely geisha are magnificent. The beauty of her wardrobe is beyond description – the wonderful coloration and fine detail on her kimono and obi is certainly the work of one of the premier artists of the Meiji period. Please note the attention to detail that the artist has provided to the folds in her kimono. The artist has paid particular attention to the detail of her hair and added an intricately carved flower in her hair to accentuate this piece. He has also done a marvelous jog of intricately carving the fingers of her hands and the toes of her feet. The rarity of this fine okimono adds to its overall mystique and desirability. This is a marvelous piece of Japanese art. The amount of detail and quality of this piece are what every okimono buyer is seeking. This carving is 100% genuine elephant IVORY and in EXCELLENT CONDITION. It was HAND CARVED and HAND SCRIMSHAWED and SIGNED in Japan by a gifted master craftsman in the late 1800s. It has a lovely patina that nature has chosen to bestow upon it. This okimono is UNIQUE and exhibits beautiful IVORY GRAIN which is guaranteed to be clearly visible. The ivory has been highly polished and exquisitely detailed. The quality of the ivory, the quality of the carving and the quality of the scrimshaw work are all exceptional. This carving was legally imported into the USA and can only be shipped to locations within the USA. In January of 2006 Columbus (the experts in Asian art) provided an auction estimate on this piece of $7,000. Auction estimates are conservative and typically well below appraised values. This piece will enhance your collection of fine Japanese ivory okimonos for many years to come and should easily increase in value over time.
