Vintage 18 K Gold Plique-à-Jour Virgin Mary Large Pendant Medal 1934 - Pristine and Unique
Presented here is a very remarkable 18 carat Solid Gold pendant medal of the Virgin Mary, dating back to 1934, with rare and unique features as follows :
a) It has measurements of 21.5 x 36 mm ( without bail ) which is quite a large size for a medal.
b) Its weight is a heavy 7.30 grams of 18 carat gold. Ir is in Pristine condition.
c) It is made using the “Plique-à-jour” technique : Plique-à-jour (French for "letting in daylight") is a vitreous enameling technique where the enamel is applied in cells, similar to cloisonné, but with no backing in the final product, so light can shine through the transparent or translucent enamel.
d) The pendant is high relief and made in France.
e) There is a monogram on the reverse: B.G and a date : 17 May 1934. This day was a Thursday so this is very probably a birthday present rather than a Communion present because Communion days are always Sundays.
The chain in the picture is NOT gold but Vermeil, which is Gold plated Sterling Silver. It is included as a gift in the offer.
Pictures have been taken so that the beautiful Plique-à-jour effect is well seen.
Two colors of enamel are apparent.
This rare item is highly attractive and extremely well done. In an exceptional as new condition it is definitely a unique heirloom. It is large and heavy in 18K Gold.
It is signed by Sellier, the famous French engraver and the wordi "VIRGO" meaning Virgin in latin is also engraved on the obverse
