This exquisite Ute dance cerimonial lance or knife blade is a Proto Historic artifact, meaning that it was made just at the beginning or just prior to writen history, or when records were being kept and is around 300 to 400 years before present in age. Made during the Spanish occupation of Utah, and in responce to the Spanish sword. This would be the Native Americans equivalance to the Spaniards iron sword. It was found in 1887 by George Washington Young at the age of 10 years old, near Stockton, Utah. Mr. Young was helping his father Alma Young digging irragation ditches on the family home stead, East of Rush Lake near Stockton, Utah, when he found the lance and apparently hit it with the blade of a shovel. The blade was flaked from a high compressed piece of shale (slate) and then hand ground and hand polished on both sides. It has been resharpened at least once. There is a sand stone inclusion on one side. Complete history and photos of the Young homestead and photos of the site will be sent with the blade. This artifact has been authenticated by Mr. Greg Perino and his authentication papers will be provided to the buyer.
