Beautifully engraved certificate from the Sterett Rod and Gun Club issued in 1914. This historic document has an ornate border around it with a vignette of the Texas Star. This item is hand signed by the Company’s President ( William H. Tobin ) and Secretary ( John H. Tobin ) and is over 88 years old. At the city of Austin Parks and Recreation Web site, the Lions Club is listed as the Lions Municipal course designer. A headline in the Oct. 19, 1924, Austin American, "Nine holes on course ready; Heavy timber cleared for scenic beauty," announced the completion of the first nine holes. John H. Tobin, the Lions Club's finance chairman and a founding member, was quoted in the accompanying story as saying the course is "one for all Austin." The story said course construction had been under way since June, but there was no mention of a designer.
