Spanish Figural Oil Painting by Ignacio Gil y Sala

This beautiful oil on canvas was painted by the Spanish artist, Ignacio Gil Sala (1913-1990). It depicts a mother and child and companion strolling along the Mediterranean coastline. Stretcher measures 36" by 24" (91.4 by 61 cm) and the frame measures 45" by 33" by 2.5" (114.3 by 83.8 by 6.3 cm). It is signed in the lower right corner. Stretcher carries the name "H Giemar" and the canvas carries the stamp of the Barcelona supplier, Casa I Guardiola. Estimated weight is 12 lbs. Canvas has not been relined and is in excellent condition. Gil was a medal winnning student and teacher at the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona. In the 1940s he exhibited at the Galerias Costa (Palma de Mallorca), and the Galerias Augusta (Barcelona). In the 1950s he exhibited at Sala Toison (Madrid), Salong Cano (Madrid), Galeria Cezanne (Cannes) and the Lars Laine Gallery (Palm Springs CA). Later in his life he was represented by the Grup d'Art Escola. Gil's works are distinguished by their heavy and confident brush strokes and impressionist style. He was fond of painting figures in the brilliant sunshine of the Mediterranean coast.
