This is a solid silver plate with an engraved Islamic design from Egypt. The plate has a sloping scalloped rim and features an eight-point star called "Khatim Sulayman" in the center, formed by two overlapping squares.
The star's center is engraved with Arabic writing and surrounded by a band of eight cartouches with calligraphic Arabic characters. The band is interrupted by eight round medallions that are also engraved with floral patterns.
Overall, it is an outstanding piece of Islamic art.
NOTE: During the Middle Ages, the eight-point star was commonly used as a symbol in Islamic art. It was known as "khatim" or "khatim sulayman," which means "seal of the prophets" and is similar to a signet ring. Muslims attach a particular ideological significance to the phrase "seal of the prophets," which is also mentioned in the Koran. The base bears Egyptian silver hallmarks: a lotus flower flanked by two Arabic characters.
