First edition published by Fenno & Company New York 1902. We are Certified Appraisers specializing in Antiques and Collectibles. This is a very rare copy of a First Edition book not seen presented in auction or retail environment. This is the most downloaded book in public domain, the most highly acclaimed book of the previous century. Let us share the story. James Allen the author never became famous or rich during his lifetime. He published this volume as his second and most famous book and it did not become famous until after his death. He died at 48. The man was a genius and the first to ever write that thoughts create our destiny. A bit of a perfectionist, he was not happy with this book and his wife encouraged or convinced him to publish. The first edition is 1902 and the inside covers present the artwork of WEB Starkweather and each page is illustrated by Starkweather. The artwork presented appears in two other famous books from the same publishing company and year and is dated in corner 1902. This is the only place this artwork presents. The cover is hand decorated by what we believe would have been his wife by hand. The first printing was very limited because James Allen had to pay the costs of publishing upfront to Fenno and Company to produce because of the risk of publishing New thought books at that time. James Allen made enough from this book to live on only his writing and went on to write 19 more books over 10 years and then died at the age of 48 in 1912. The book was re-released and authorized for release many times and in many languages in beautiful binding and high quality covers as it's popularity soared. The volume went on to become an icon of the century and believed to be the basis for Napoleon Hill's famous text "Think and Grow Rich" and the movie followed by the book "The Secret" as well as the foundation for many self help businesses and the a source of reference for many great success coaches and respected and highly successful businessmen and leaders. This book is now public domain and can be downloaded for free. I have included many details of both the book and the known brief available history of the author. Including a Youtube video about the book and the famous quotes that resulted. James Allen was a very introverted person and there is very little about his life recorded. A great deal about his thoughts are revealed in his writings. There are no recorded sales of this first edition at Worthpoint, Sotheby's or Christies. Rumoured to be very limited in First release. This highly acclaimed volume has been reprinted in several languages and is referenced in teaching by many masters. The content is now public domain. It is the basis for some of the world's most powerful success coaches. First edition of one of the Most famous books of the century. "As A man Thinketh" by James Allen. Published 1902, dated on illustration only. His wife convinced him to publish this amazing text that has changed the lives of millions. Measures 7 1/2 inches by 5 inches. 56 illustrated pages. Illustrations are by W.E.B. Starkweather and dated 1902 on covers inside and on pages throughout. Same illustrations used in 1902 Friendship by Ralph Waldo Emerson, R.F. Fenno and Co. and 1902 The March of the White Guard by Gilbert Parker, R.F. Fenno and Co.. Published by R. F. Fenno & Co. As A man Thinketh by James Allen. Hardcover. In good condition. Some minor bends to corners of pages and minor curves to hardcover edges. Some pages water marked minor in the top seam and edging out a little few back pages water marked down the sides. Cover is decorated with flowers, looks hand applied that supports the theory that the first publishing was limited. Front cover has 25 written in red pencil crayon which has been removed and is barely visible. Gold embossed text has a spot faint and there are three lighter patches of green where it has been cleaned lightly? Two on front and one on back. Pages are all present and intact. Binding is tight but few pages have minor marks. Overall good for age. Name recorded back inside page. WEB Starkweather illustrated many books from 1899 to 1930. Inside cover of Friendship, 1902 By Ralph Waldo Emerson is the same as this book. R. F. Fenno and Company was in business under the name Fenno & Company from 1895 until 1929. They published books often taking deposits from writers in case the book failed and to cover costs. James Allen (1864-1912) An unrewarded genius James Allen is a literary mystery man. His inspirational writings have influenced millions for good. Yet today he remains almost unknown...... None of his nineteen books give a clue to his life other than to mention his place of residence - Ilfracombe, England. His name cannot be found in a major reference work. Not even the Library of Congress or the British Museum has much to say about him. Who was this man who believed in the power of thought to bring fame, fortune and happiness? Or did he, as Henry David Thoreau says, hear a different drummer?...... James Allen never gained fame or fortune. That much is true. His was a quiet, unrewarded genius. He seldom made enough money from his writings to cover expenses. As A Man Thinketh was Allen's second book. Despite its subsequent popularity he was dissatisfied with it. Even though it was his most concise and eloquent work, the book that best embodied his thought, he somehow failed to recognize its value. His wife Lily had to persuade him to publish it. James Allen strove to live the ideal life described by Russia¹s great novelist and mystic Count Leo Tolstoy - the life of voluntary poverty, manual labour and ascetic self-discipline. The works of James Allen are eminently practical. He never wrote theories, or for the sake of writing, or to add another to the existing books. According to his wife, Allen wrote when he had a message, and it became a message only when he had lived it in his own life, and knew that it was good.
