Imagine my amazement to find this secret compartment in this very old antique 19th century gilt silver fish pendant or chatelaine necessary. This fish was so detailed to begin with ( see close-ups) that you can tell he is one of the early originals and he is 3" long. Under his mouth are these straight designs that are actually the door to this exceptional piece of art. I have never seen so much work in one piece to make it do so much. OF course the fish is designed to bend and move. This pomander was made for the insertion of a scent-soaked piece of cotton or fabric, etc..Perfume or smelling salts would have been the scent or oil . . The fine silver mesh allows the scent to escape slowly, gently perfuming the air around the wearer. OR Possibly could have been used to store a fine small trinket or jewel.The latch works great on this and the only thing missing is its original piece of cotton. He is EXTREMELY well made and a really impressive piece too. All his gills are hinged. If you collect perfumes are antique Chinese pieces then this will definitely be real treasure!. His eye is real turquoise too and he is marked Silver China on his inner lip. He needed a great home so I added him to this large beaded collar necklace with Fish themed heavy brass frame. Doesn't he look great? The thick newer collar necklace measures up to 18" long by 1" wide. Rich metal snake chain is woven in with copper braid which brings out the rich colors of mixed metals. This is not a small necklace so be ready for drama and compliments!
