Johnny's daughter, Marcella was a sickly child and suffered from the side effects of a powerful smallpox vaccine. Johnny told his daughter stories about the Raggedy Ann doll that she had found at her grandmother's house. The doll had no face and he painted the now famous face with the black eyes, red triangle nose and separated mouth on the old doll. After Marcella's death in 1915 Johnny immersed himself in the work of putting into written form the many stories he used to tell Marcella to keep her entertained. This was the start of the first Raggedy Ann stories in 1918.
