This is a delightful marble statue of Roman maiden by Pietro Bazzanti (1842-1881), son of Niccolo Bazzanti (1802-1869) and grandson of the founder of Galleria Pietro Bazzanti & Figlio, Pietro Bazzanti (1775-?).  Measures: 49 x 17 x 17 in; 124 x 43 x 43 cm.  Signed "P. Bazzanti" and "Florence".

Galleria Pietro Bazzanti & Figlio was founded in Florence in 1822 by Pietro Bazzanti (1775-?) when he took over the studio opened in 1815 by Luigi Bozzolini.  His son, Niccolo Bazzanti, was also a very talented sculptor who studied at Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence under Professor Carradori.

The Bazzanti family studio ialso operated as a gallery, featuring the works of Pietro's contemporaries, including Cesare Lapini, Guglielmo Pugi and Ferdinando Vichi, all of whom were celebrated and in demand throughout Europe and America.  Like his peers operating at the height of Florentine sculpture toward the end of the 19th century, Pietro Bazzanti favored historicized romantic and classical subjects, and executed exceptional copies of works by many of the leading Italian sculptors including Donatello, Giambologna, Canova and Bartolini.  The Bazzanti studio is an historic landmark in Florence and is still in operation today.
