Bowl of 5 ½" diameter with molded lip and baluster base. Stamped with “HMS AJAX” and broad arrow ordnance mark. Pewter stamp on underside of base. Stands 2 3/8" high. Very good uncleaned condition. Eight ships have been commissioned in the Royal Navy with the name HMS Ajax, beginning with a 74 gun ship of the line launched in 1767 and ending with a frigate scrapped in 1988. The list also includes a 74 gun Third Rate which fought at Trafalgar. This bowl likely from the Ajax-class ironclad battleship which was launched in 1880.
