Pair Rock Crystal Obelisks

$9,500.00
Quantity available: 1

Our client's lovely pair of vintage, mid-century modern rock crystal obelisks, attributed to George Stangl, feature gold mounts with cabouchon ruby stones and measure 18 inches tall. Apparently unsigned.  One with diamond shaped design on the sphere.

Born in Czechoslovakia, the artist lived and worked in France and the U.S., exhibiting at a number of galleries in New York City and elsewhere in the 1960s and 1970s.  The Van Cleef & Arpels boutique at Bergdorf Goodman exclusively represented the artist in the mid/late 1960s, where prices ranged from $375 to $10,000.  He sculpted from exotic stones such as jasper, rock crystal and rare marbles, and is known for both abstract and animal figurative sculptures that incorporated gold, silver and precious stones.

In promoting an exhibition in Montreal, Canada, in 1967, he said, "I have always been fascinated by works of art from the Middle Ages. Since my studies at the decorative arts in Prague, and at the Beaux-Arts in Paris, I dreamed of art objects created by the great masters of the Renaissance, but the necessities of life had made me a jewelry designer.”  We think this quote summarizes beautifully his inspiration and many of the qualities of our jasper stone figure.

Provenance upon request.
