Beautiful and unusual pair of five-lobed, cinquefoil dishes with a pattern of white, open wing cranes and clouds over a blue ground. The crane is represented here with its head in profile and open wings forming a circle and is repeated 6 times, once in each of the dishes five lobes and one in the center. In Japanese culture the Tsuru or Crane is a sacred bird that symbolizes longevity and wisdom. It is also associated with marriage and fidelity as cranes are monogamous and mate for life. Plates are decorated on the reverse in blue over white in typical Imari fashion and are unmarked on the underside. In very good used condition with minor imperfections from the time of manufacture as shown. Shipped fully insured with tracking number. Measurements: 6.5" at widest point approximately.
