Beautifully engraved Certificate from the famous Pacific Oil Tool Company, LTD issued in 1929. This historic document has an ornate border around it with a vignette of an oil field. This item is hand signed by the company's president, Walter T. "Prep" Wells and is over 71 years old. In 1932, Wilfred G. "Bill" Lane entered partnership with classmate Walter T. "Prep" Wells in the Lane-Wells Company which took over the old Pacific Oil Tool Company of Los Angeles, specializing and developing technical oil field services. Their first success was the invention of a gun perforator to pierce holes in oil well steel casings and cement liners to increase oil flow. This device proved to be a significant contribution to production in over 30,000 oil wells in the U.S. Lane Wells evolved into a full service wireline logging and perforating company. Acquired by Dresser Industries in 1954, Lane Wells merged with Pan Geo Atlas Corporation in 1968 to form Dresser Atlas. The new firm continued to expand as a worldwide supplier of formation evaluation and completion services. The company was eventually merged into Baker Hughes which is the combination of many innovative companies that have developed and introduced technology to serve the petroleum service industry. Their combined history dates back to the early 1900s. In 1907, Reuben C. Baker developed a casing shoe that revolutionized cable tool drilling. In 1909, Howard R. Hughes, Sr. introduced the first roller cutter bit that dramatically improved the rotary drilling process. Over the next eight decades, Baker International and Hughes Tool Company became worldwide leaders in well completions, drilling tools and related services. The two companies merged in 1987 to form Baker Hughes Incorporated.
