Unavailable
This is a framed oil on canvas by Otakar (Ottokar) Kubin (1883- 1969), the important Moravian-born painter who emigrated to France and assumed the French name, Othon Coubine. Canvas measures 32" by 26" (81.3 by 66 cm) and the frame measures 40" by 34" by 2.75" (101.6 by 86.4 by 7 cm). There is noticeable craquelure especially to the right and left of the flowers, and some minor losses. We have not inspected nor photographed the rear, and have not inspected the canvas under UV. Coubine was born in 1883 in Boskovice, a town in the Drahanská Highlands, north of Brno in Moravia in the modern day Czech Republic. He studied at the School of Stone Sculpture in Horice from 1898 to 1900, and at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague from 1900 to 1904. He studied and was influenced by Impressionism, early Post-Impressionism, and painted as well in the Expressionist style, having been influenced by van Gogh among others. In the 1900s he became a founding member of the artist's group, Osma or "the eight" (along with Vincenc Benes, Antonin Prochazka, Bohumil Kubista, Max Horb, Willy Nowak, Emil Filla, and Bedrich Feigl) and first exhibited as a member of the group in 1907. In this early period he painted landscapes with country themes. After moving to Paris in 1912 he became influenced by the Cubism movement and his style became more angular and primitive. After WWI his work returned to Post-Impressionist and Expressionist styles, and his subjects were commonly still lifes and country landscapes influenced by his surroundings in Provence. He settled in Aix-en-Provence and later in Simaine where he became a naturalized citizen in 1926. Coubine died in Marseille, France in 1969.
