This antique kingwood and mahogany bookcase or display cabinet in the neoclassical French Louis XVI style by Maison Krieger features ormolu bronze mounts (including guilloche motif along the frieze and beaded borders on the side panels and glazed doors), a marble top, raised feet, and unique lacquered panels in the Chinoiserie style. It measures 60.5" tall, 40.5" wide and 16.25" deep. The overall condition is very good. There are some scratches and dings, and a few minor veneer losses. Maison Krieger was one of the most important French cabinet makers of the second half of the nineteenth century. According to Sotheby's, Antoine and his brother Nicolas launched Maison Krieger in 1826 at 17 Rue Saint-Nicolas in Paris. In 1850 the firm was established as Antoine Krieger et Cie. However, when Antoine Krieger died in 1856, his son-in-law began running the company and decided to change the name to Cosse- Racault et Cie. After a merger in 1880, the name was changed to Krieger, Damon et Cie, and the firm become one of the largest furniture workshops in Paris, located at 74, Rue Du Faubourg- Saint-Antoine. Francois Linke was also known to have produced pieces for the company. This item resides with our client in midtown Manhattan ( New York City ) and may be seen by appointment. Thanks for visiting.
