This sterling hinged vinagrette is signed on the inside and has a forget me not on the top. It is so exciting to have such a small piece find its way thru generations to be appreciated as these tiny vinaigrettes. This one has the greek key design along the edges and would probably have been a tourist piece. From 1775 to 1880 chinese marks were used for the Western Market. Likely a young gent would have purchased this for his lovely wife or fiance'. This one is marked Sung. China silver. Probably from Shanghai, this beautifully adorned case has the same shape as the flower on top. Inside are 4 holes where the scent would escape. This measures 1 7/8" x 1 1/3" and is 1/4" deep. IN times when horse drawn carriages were popular, the aroma was quite unpleasant and women would use these to cover the most uncomfortable of smells.
