Antique Chinese Republic Period Shiwan Porcelain Figurine Li Tieguai

$400.00
Quantity available: 1

Antique Chinese Shiwan porcelain from the Republic Period, a finely hand-sculptured figurine depicting Daoist (Taoist) immortal Li Tieguai seated on a rocky base wearing a flowing monastic robe hanging from his left shoulder, clasping a crutch in his left hand, and a calabash gourd stands to his right.

The sculpture is signed (impressed stamp) with Chinese characters in a diamond-shaped frame at the base.

The figure is finely hand carved with great details. All details, such as the head, including bulbous eyes with pronounced eyebrows, open mouth with delicately sculpted teeth, long hair held by a headband, unruly tufts of beard, torso, arms, hands, fingers, legs, and toes, have been skillfully hand chased and richly covered with a beautiful shiny glaze.

The legend says that Li was born in the Yuan dynasty (1279–1368) and was originally named "Li Xuan." However, in folklore, he is depicted as Laozi's apprentice; hence he should have lived in the sixth century B.C.
