Antique Exotic Aesthetic Austrian Majolica Vase by Julus Dressler
This fabulous majolica (earthenware) vase, circa 1890s, comes from the factory of Julius Dressler, based in the former Austrian town of Biela (Bela), Czech Republic, near the Polish border. Designed and decorated in the Aesthetic style, it features the raised decorations of cranes in a marsh landscape, with bronze mounts modeled as water plants. This is one of the largest Dressler vases we've seen in our 14 years in business, and the only one of its kind we have seen to be decorated with bronze mounts. Underside marked "Austria" with maker's mark in form of a tall kiln tower, with the letters JBD and numeric mark for the piece. Partial paper retailer's label remains. Measures: 19 x 12 x 10 in. Condition is good. There are some glaze losses noticeable below the rim on the inside, scratches, and rubbing/wear to the bronze mounts, and surface grime, all consistent with age.
Founded by Dressler in the 1880s, the firm was known for producing highly decorative maiolica, faience and porcelain in the Austrian Art Nouveau style, Jugendstil, and Secessionist styles.
