A rare majolica portrait tile from the United States Encaustic Tile Company of Indianapolis, IN, c. 1886, depicting Shakespeare's Ophelia, finished in a translucent amber gold glaze. The tile is intaglio carved "Ophelia" and formed in very high relief; it is in very good condition with light wear to some of the flowers in her hair and glaze bruises from previous use in fireplace at highpoints as shown.
