A very unusual antique 18th century Russian orthodox icon. Hand painted on a wooden panel depicting the appearance of the Virgin, and the Apostles Peter and John, to St. Sergius of Radonezh, and his cell-attendant Micah.
The icon is applied with two very rare gold gilt copper square Icons, finely embossed and chased, most likely from the 16th-17th century, or older. The top square panel depicts the Holly Trinity, the smaller panel on the right represents the Mother of God with Jesus. The icon is cased in a sturdy gild copper frame.
CONDITION: In its original condition, free of repairs or restorations, with an old patina and wear, some flakes in the paint.
DIMENSIONS: 30.5 cm x 26.5 cm (12 in x 10 3/8 in).
