An antique Russian Orthodox brass blessing cross from the 18th century, circa 1750 AD, in a rare form.
Jesus is depicted crucified in the center in a Byzantine manner, flanked by a Holy Spear of Longinus and the Holy sponge, with one arm of the cross inclined to symbolize his value as the 'Scales of Justice.' At his feet, there is the skull of Adam, a symbol of humanity redeemed from original sin through the sacrifice of Jesus, while above the cross is the Byzantine cosmos with the God Father "LORD SABAOTH," the dove of the Holy Spirit, and two angels waiting for the body and soul of Jesus. The middle bar of the cross is incised with the text of prayer and two six-winged Seraphim angels on the top.
The reverse of the crucifix is incised with the text of prayer.
