To a first quality neoclassic drawing room fireplace mantelpiece reported to have been removed from a mansion in North Carolina. The mantel is constructed of hard pine and poplar. The shelf has three projections and a band course of diamond and reed trim. The frieze has three projected tablets agreeing with the shelf, separating the two end tablets is a course of hand carved stop fluted detilation with double serrated moulding. The center tablet is mounted with a stylized diamond. The end tablets are console brackets centered with bead and flattened reel. Between the tablets is richly carved fluting with serrated separators. The mantel jambs or legs are mounted with stop fluted columns with turned capitals and projected plinths with diamond trim to the front. The columns have enthisis and also surbases below their decorative plinths. The richly moulded mantel surround trim is topped with a course of reeding between two serrated trim sections.The mantel has been hand cleaned of all old paint buildup, woodwork repairs have been made as necessary and a rich hand rubbed patina finish applied. Should you wish to paint the mantel, use a soft cloth with turpentine to remove any wax from the surface of the mantel prior to painting.
