Neoclassical Putti Cherubs Painting After Nicolai Abraham Abildgaard (Danish1743-1809)

Unavailable

This large figurative work in the allegorical neoclassical style depicting two putti holding a festoondates from the late 18th to early 19th century.  Canvas measures approximately 38 by 50 in and the later giltwood frame measures 48 by 60 in (122 by 152 cm).  The work is unsigned, but on the rear is an old paper label apparently dating from the 19th century that reads in ink "Abildgaard og...", Danish for "Abildgaard and...". The second name appears to read Fribrsch and appears to be a misspelling.  The frame appears to date from the early/mid 20th century and carries an engraved brass plaque reading Prof. Nikolaj Abraham Abilgaard (sic).  Overall condition is good. There is considerable inpainting across roughly 70% of the surface.  The frame is possibly of the period of the painting, but has certainly been regilded.

Abildgaard (1743-1809) was a Danish neoclassical and royal painter of history, sculptor, architect, and professor of painting and mythology at the Royal Danish Academy of Art in Copenhagen.  Many of his works were displayed in the royal Christiansborg Palace, plus the Fredensborg Palace and Levetzau Palace in Amalienborg.  His interests focused on the genre of history painting, but also was interested in literature and painted works with themes taken from Greek and Norse mythology.  He achieved great frame in Denmark and helped pave the way toward the golden age of Danish painting.  50 of his finest works are held in museums, but his works rarely appear for sale privately or at public auction.
