Native American Hand Carved St. Gabriel sculpture out of yucca cactus wood. Carved in the 1930's, this is a lost art, as there is no yucca cactus large enough to carve much of anything. So much building, clearing of land for farming, etc. has depleted all the large yucca. This came from an old church on the New Mexico Zuni reservation. In the 1960's, when everyone else was rebelling the Native Americans decided to get rid of the white man's religion and reinstall their own. The old church was torn down, and the relics sold, and a new native church installed. This statue was acquired by a Native American Trader I have dealt with for many years. It is beautifully carved, and measures 18 inches tall, and is 5 inches across the widest part. In near mint condition, no damage do I see. Thanks for shopping in the Land of Enchantment!
