Quantity available: 1

Our client's monumental porcelain urn in the Empire style with gilt bronze mounts dates from the late 19th century and measures 38.5 in by 12.5 in (97.8 by 31.7 cm).  It features a large painting of the coronation of Napoleon after the original painting by Jacque Louis David, and on reverse a lovely depiction of La Malmaison, the residence of Empress Josephine on the banks of the Seine.  Signed "J. Pascault J'apres David musee du Louvre".  Underside of lid signed "Sacre de Napoleon 1804" and "M Imple Sevres".  Hardware is in good condition, allowing the vase to turn smoothly to enjoy both sides.

Overall condition is good. There are scratches, rubbing wear, oxidation and areas of light verdigris on the bronze surfaces. There is surface dirt in crevices and light scratches to the porcelain, plus a small round puncture to the glaze detailed in one of our closeups. There are apparent restorations to cracks or breaks to the lid, including inpainting and regilding. There is a crack to the porcelain base and bronze.

The scene is based on The Consecration of the Emperor Napoleon and the Coronation of Empress Josephine on December 2, 1804  which was painted in 1807 by Jacque Louis David. It depicts Napoleon, already crowned, lowering the empress's crown upon Josephine.

Jean Pascault was a revered porcelain painter who exhibited at the Paris Salon in the 1870s and 1880s.
