Beautifully engraved certificate from the Mobile and Ohio Rail Road Company issued in 1879. This historic document was printed by the American Banknote Company and has an ornate border around it with a vignette of a train passing by a waterfront and a period cancellation. This item is hand signed by the companys president, secretary, and assistant secretary and is over 122 years old. In 1849-50 the Congress passed an Act called the Mobile & Ohio Rail Road Grant. This gave the Mobile and Ohio Rail Road Company a 100' wide use-grant right of way from Mobile, Alabama to the mouth of the Ohio River and every other even numbered Township on either side of the rigth of way. This amounted to a 12 mile-wide swath of virgin timber through the wilderness. This set the stage for the golden area of timber that would last from 1891 to 1930.
