A very fine carved ivory seal paste box from the Meiji period. The cover and sides are deeply carved in a chrysanthemum pattern extending from the center of the top all the way down to the lower edge. The pattern matches perfectly at the seam. The carving is beautifully designed and executed. Chrysanthemums represent various concepts in traditional Japanese symbology, including majesty, perfection and long life; it is still the Imperial symbol. The ivory has taken on a light golden patina. Origin: Japan, ca. 1890. Condition: excellent, the lid has crazing (no open cracks) on the interior as is typical. Size: 2-1/2” diameter; 1-3/8” high. NOTE: We will not ship this item outside the United States.
