Johnny told his daughter stories about the Raggedy Ann doll that she had found at her grandmother's house. The doll had no face and he painted the now famous face with the black eyes, red triangle nose and separated mouth on the old doll. Marcella succumbed to the infection and died in 1915. Johnny immersed himself in the work of putting into written form the many stories he used to tell Marcella to keep her entertained. This was the start of the first Raggedy Ann stories in 1918. This is the first of the Raggedy Ann stories that was dedicated to Johnny's daughter, Marcella.
