This majestic antique French slant front desk has so much character in its simplicity and straight forward lines.  Its slant front has a shaped outer edge with two conforming indented panels separated by a circle of symmetrical interlacing. A key has been fitted for opening the front panel, however, the original lock is not there.  When opened, there are two cabinets with concentric circles carved out of the wood on the front doors.  A central open space for storage or books is between the two cabinets that has traces of old wall paper. A hole has been bored into the back for electronic usage. Key back plates are on the front of each of the doors; however, one does not have a hole for a key, while the other has an opening for an old lock which is included inside but not installed. The bottom section has two symmetrical en chapeau indented panels with conforming moldings.  The apron is shaped on the front and sides.  The front feet are scrolled with stylized acanthus leaves over them. The corners are rounded panels above the leaves and the back feet are block. The panels on either side of the desk are acute on the top and rectangular on the bottom.

There are no more than two or three regions that can lay claim to the circle motif (top, center): Brittany, Bearn, and the Basque country.  In Brittany, we call them “Galettes” and in Basque we call them “Culs de Bouteilles”.  In our opinion, this desk is from the Basque country in the region of Soule, but not far from Oloron en Bearn.  The rest of the décor and structure of this desk is typical Louis XV Basque.  In Bearn, the Louis XIII dominates.

This wonderful antique French slant front desk from the early 1700’s will be an asset anywhere it is placed.
