Large Carved Antique Chinese Altar Table

Unavailable
Rare Antique Chinese Console Table (Large Carved Antique Chinese Altar Table). Exceptional design on this large antique Chinese altar table from the Qing Dynasty. The design of the side legs is rarely seen. They feature red lacquered panels encased, on both sides, between pierced carvings of flowering vines, and resting on sturdy platforms. The spandrels are designed into the simple apron, at each end and on the front and back. On one side (front/back) of the altar the spandrels are pierced carvings of lotus, guardian fu lions, coins and ribbons. On the other side (front/back) of the altar the spandrels are pierced carvings of birds and plum blossoms. The top of the altar table is multi-paneled, with flared everted ends. The front of the legs have vertical beading and well as the apron. The black lacquer finish is original and reveals a lovely patina-worn in places, especially the top of the altar. The height to the flat surface of the table is 36.25 inches (92cm), to the top of the everted ends is 39" (99cm).

Traditionally, altar tables were often placed against a wall, one side, the side facing outward, was usually more elaborate than the backside. On this altar table both sides are equally beautiful and detailed, which leads one to think that sometimes, it was placed so it would be seen from all sides.
