This bag is a piece of art. Notice the leaf design on front. It has fine stitching, a snap closing, brown fabric (cotton) lining with a division in the center of the clutch. This is a piece of art because of the fabric. Women of Kibera use money from sales to purchase more material. I have wall hangings (34 years) made from barkcloth that are still in good condition. The barkcloth for this item was imported to Kenya from Uganda. To make the cloth the bark is cut from the "barktree" (Ficus Natalensis) then it is scraped with a knife and left to dry over night. The following morning it is scraped again and beaten with a wooden mallet until it acquires the thickness of strong, brown paper. The fine red color is achieved by exposure to the sun. An eighteen inch strip of bark can be beaten into a cloth over seven feet broad, and one tree can yield up to forty strippings. Formerly barkcloth was made on a domestic basis in Uganda. Each home had its own "barktrees", and the barkcloth was used for clothing, bedding, wall hangings, and shrouds. Barkcloth is still made by a number of people in Uganda. Barkcloth items we sell from Tanzania are much lighter in color and unlined. This is not barkcloth such as American women use for draperies and pillows.
