King Louis XIV & Queen in Versailles Bedchamber by Desnos

Unavailable
Depicted in this exceptional, large oil on canvas by Louise Adelaide Desnos (1807-?) is a young female greeting the Queen of France, Marie Therese, in her bedchamber, with King Louis XIV shown observing in the background. Stretcher measures 37 by 33 inches and the frame measures 50.5 by 46.75 by 2.5 inches. The work is signed "Louise Desnos 1838" in the lower right corner of the canvas. There are no verso markings. Condition is excellent, with no visible losses nor signs of repair. The canvas surface may have been professionally cleaned sometime in the past few years. Camera flash was not used in all of our photos, which explains the differences in color and contrast among some shots. Provenance provided upon request. We know this scene depicts the Queen's bedchamber at Versailles based on the distinctive yellow and white decorations on the wall panels which today. While this scene depicts Queen Marie Therese (1636-1683) and King Louis XIV (1638-1715), the artist has not attempted to recreate the room's decorations and furnishings as it would have appeared in during the reign of Louis XIV. Instead, the setting appears as it would have during the artist's lifetime and much as it still appears today. (Nothing of the original room's designs by Charles le Brun survived a redesign completed 1730-1735 for Maria Leczinska, Queen to Louis XV, which was maintained by the royal family until the revolution and which has been maintained by the state ever since.) We currently know little about the artist, but a couple important portraits by Desnos are worth noting. His portrait of King Louis Philippe is held by the Châteaux de Versailles et de Trianon, and his portrait (after Louis Hersent) of Marie-Amélie of the house of Bourbon and Sicily (queen to Louis-Philippe) is held by the Musée Louis-Philippe at Château d' Eu and is mentioned at the museum's website.
