Joan of Arc ( Jeanne d'Arc) / Marie D'Orleans Medal

Commemorative souvenir medal of the construction of the Statue of Jeanne D'Arc by Marie D'Orleans. OBS: Bust relief of a woman, diademed head facing right and a pearl necklace around neck. Around the rim is inscribed "Marie D'Orleans" and Duchesse De Wurtemberg". Montagny F under the base of the bust. REV: A figure of a woman with short hair and in half armor, standing with arms held at her chest and holding a sword under the hilt and pointed down. A tree stump behind her is holding her gloves and helmet and is marked MF 1837. Around the rim is inscribed "Statue Jeanne D'Arc". Size: 52 mm Weight: 71.6 gm Metal: Bronze Dated on Rev 1837 but this medal is a re-strike. Signed Montagny F both OBS and Rev. Marked on edge with Pointing Hand and CUIVRE. While this means copper in English, the medal is bronze. Based on this edge marking, the medal is a re-strike made between 1845 to 1860. It is struck from the original dies and not the later dies since Montagny F is inscribed parallel to the neck line and not curved around the rim on the obs and also inscribed parallel with the exergue on the rev and not curved around the rim of the medal. Comes in original round wood case. Note: Marie Christine Caroline Adélaïde Françoise Léopoldine of Orléans, known as Marie of Orléans (1813-1839) was a French princess (a daughter of Louis-Philippe, King of the French) and, by her marriage, duchess of Würtemberg (1837).
