Two engraved portraits of legendary scientific figures. The first is of Baron Alexander Von Humboldt (1769-1859), whose portrait reads "Copyright 1881 by Henry J. Johnson From the latest portrait from life Henry J. Johnson, Publisher, New York." On the back, someone has written in ink a brief biographical sketch: "Founder of modern science of physical geograhy described in his picturesque book called "Cosmos" [sic] written in 1845." The Schiller portrait reads "From an original painting by Melcher of Berlin, Johnson Wilson & Co. Publishers New York." Each portrait bears a facsimile of the subject's signature beneath the portrait.
