This bronze figurine by the American artist, Hugo Robus (1885-1964) depicting a fluid female holding a flower is entitled "Seated Woman with Memories".  21 x 10 x 8 in (53 x 25 x 20 cm).  Foundry mark reads "Fonderia Artistica / Battaglia / Milano". Provenance: Sotheby's, New York, sale of American Paintings, Drawings and Sculpture, March 14, 2001, lot 202, estimate $7,000-$10,000 (bought-in).

Robus was born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1885.  He studied at the Cleveland School of Art and the National Academy of Design under Emil Carlsen, and in Paris at the Academie de la Grand Chaumiere under Antoine Bourdelle. In New York ha taught at the Modern Art School at Columbia University, the Brooklyn Museum School, and Hunter College. His figurative sculpture was unique for its lyrical style, featuring rounded, bulbous and often androgynous bodies formed by long, continuous arcs.

From the 1930s through his passing in 1964, his work was featured in exhibitions at galleries and institutions in New York including the Whitney Museum of American Art, Forum Gallery, Grand Central Art Galleries, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Sculpture Center, and The Brooklyn Museum.  He also exhibited at Corcoran Gallery in Washington, D.C., Yale University Art Gallery, the Newark Museum, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Art, among others.
