Beautifully engraved certificate from the Hay-Adams House, Inc. issued in 1931. This historic document has an ornate border around it with a vignette of an eagle perched upon a rock in front of a waterfront city. This item is hand signed by the company’s president and treasurer and is over 69 years old. At the turn of the century, when John Hay and Henry Adams were paragons, social and political Washington revolved around their adjoining homes facing Lafayette Square. When the Hay-Adams House (now Hay-Adams Hotel), an Italian Renaissance design by Mirhan Mesrobian, was built on the same site in 1927, it remained the epicenter of polite society. Charles Lindbergh, Amelia Earhart, Sinclair Lewis, and Ethel Barrymore were guests. Today, this classic hotel has been restored to its original grandeur, a restoration hailed by Architectural Digest. The Hay-Adams is "as close as one can get to staying at the White House, short of being invited by the President," said W magazine. First member of Historic Hotels of America. In the U.S. Capital's most prestigious location, The Hay-Adams Hotel welcomes guests with a tradition of cultured civility and gracious hospitality. Its Italian Renaissance motif creates an inviting ambiance of dignified refinement from the richly paneled lobby to the famous Lafayette at The Hay-Adams. This is the only certificate we have seen of this company.
