This large painting of the Atlantic Surf was done in oils on upson board by Alfred Hair. Hair was one of a group of 21 self-taught Afro-American artists during the 1950s, 60s, and 70s who have come to be known as the "Florida Highwaymen." These young men and one woman painted at night and took to the roadways by day, traveling up and down Florida's East Coast selling their Florida Landscapes to motels, banks, and professional offices. In the 1990's collectors began seeking out these paintings, resulting in an escalation of prices. These paintings, which once sold from trunks of automobiles for $25 now command $500 to $10,000 in art galleries through the state. Alfred Hair was killed in 1970 at the age of 29 and his paintings are among the rarest and most sought after of the group. This painting has the original artist-made crown molding frame and is in very good condition, especially in view of its age. The dimensions given include the frame.
