A fine and rare early neo-classic rectangular cast iron fireback signed by the maker (Pine Grove). This furnace, which was located in southern Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, was founded in 1764. This example retains rococo style moulding surrounding the central female figure holding a stick, next to a memorial column and various stylized flowers. This is a rare survival of early American neoclassic folk art and the piece was used to protect the interior of the soft brick fireplaces or hearths from destruction. (#1583)
