Exceptionally rare 1st edition Cyclopaedia of African Methodism. Alexander Walker Wayman (1821-1895) Baltimore: Methodist Episcopal Book Depository, 1882 Wayman, the 7th Bishop of the A.M.E. church was one of the most active bishops of the African Methodist Episcopal Church during the Civil War and Reconstruction era. Bishop Levi J. Coppin (1848-1923) compared Wayman to Frederick Douglass, calling them "two of the bright lights in the cause of freedom and education of black slaves and freedmen." Cyclopaedia of African Methodism includes entries for over 1000 significant people and places within the A.M.E. Church from 1816 through 1882. The book includes biographical sketches of the first 14 bishops of the A.M.E. Church including Richard Allen, Morris Brown, Edward Waters, William Paul Quinn, Willis Nazrey, Daniel Payne, Jabez Campbell, Alexander James Shorter, Thomas Ward, Henry McNeal Turner, William Fisher Dickerson, & Richard Cain. Complete 190 pages fair/good condition.
