Early 19th Century French Giltwood Five-Arm Wall Sconce
This antique French giltwood five- arm flat wall sconce has ornamentation of stylized acanthus leaves and florets. The bobeches with pics for the candles gradually rise to the high point in the center. There are slight traces of red bole beneath the gilding, with yellow bole to the back. There is a metal bracket for hanging attached to the back. Of course, a bracket could always be fitted to permit table use as well. Also, keep in mind that a mirror could be added to the center opening! Probably once a church sconce, this beautiful gilded piece can now be used in the home.
Condition – Minor rubs to gilding; Old restorations to age cracks; Metal bobeches and back bracket added at a later date.
