Dragon Form Red Jasper Stone Box by George Stangl

$8,450.00
Quantity available: 1

Our client's wonderful dragon form box, carved by the Czechoslavakian-born artist, George Stangl, circa 1975, is crafted from red jasper stone and decorated with silver, gold, emeralds and pearls.  With the maker's mark and 18K marking on underside. Height:  8.25 in; 21 cm.

Born in Czechoslovakia, the artist lived and worked in France and the U.S., exhibiting at a number of galleries in New York City and elsewhere in the 1960s and 1970s.  The Van Cleef & Arpels boutique at Bergdorf Goodman exclusively represented the artist in the mid/late 1960s, where prices ranged from $375 to $10,000.  He sculpted from exotic stones such as jasper, rock crystal and marble, and commonly adorned his sculpture and jewelry in gold, silver and precious stones as seen in our client's piece.

In promoting an exhibition in Montreal, Canada, in 1967, he said, "I have always been fascinated by works of art from the Middle Ages. Since my studies at the decorative arts in Prague, and at the Beaux-Arts in Paris, I dreamed of art objects created by the great masters of the Renaissance, but the necessities of life had made me a jewelry designer.”  We think this quote summarizes beautifully his inspiration and many of the qualities of our jasper stone figure.
