One of the many books from the Estate of Francis P. Fretwell that Dogtreasures.com will be selling. The library is the largest privately owned collection of dog books in the world. Mr. Fretwell was the owner of Monfret Kennels, which bred champion standard poodles. He was former president and governor of the Poodle Club of America, and the Italian Greyhound Club of America. He also served as a delegate to the American Kennel Club for decades. His wonderful collection of books has been carefully maintained. *** Dogs. Frederick Freeman Lloyd and Charles G. Hopton, eds. New York: Library Supply Company of America, 1907. Folio, 190p., full black leather, gilt, gilt edges. Profusely illustrated (many tipped in) of named dogs. Over 53 breeds (including the Roseneath Terrier). Frequently mistakenly referred to as Melbourne’s Dogs as G. A. Melbourne (of the Library Supply Company of America, was the publisher and holder of the copyright). 14 unidentified contributors in addition to Lloyd and Charles Hopton, q.v., who supplied 15 sections. For greater background see Clifford L. B. Hubbard’s “A Book at Random”, Kennel Gazette, CXV:1373 (September 1994) 58-60. Shaken, spine torn, Mr. Fretwell's bookplate on front fixed endpaper, some age stain, text and illustrations generally in very good condition. Scarce, out of print.
