Description:
This Portrait plate was made and handpainted by the fabulous Sevres factory in France in 1868 and is just wonderful. The young lady is beautifully hand painted in intricate detail and has lovely long dark curls (of which you can see each outlined) and an exquisite face. She wears a simple strand of pearls at her neck and a purple shawl with a white chiffon-like soft scoup neckline. It appears that her dress is underlaid with chiffon and she has fabulous blue sleeves with slits over top that show the chiffon underneath. The plate is bordered in a robin's egg blue and has a cartouche in the upper middle of the border that appears to be a scrolled "LB" - this was no doubt the monogram of the family that owned the service. The plate is rimmed in gilding as is the portrait. This plate is in mint condition. It has the "S68" mark of the Sevres factory, c. 1868. There is an old auction label still affixed to the bottom of this piece, but I cannot discern what it says. This plate is absolutely mint, no chips, cracks or crazing. It is of the purest white background. If you look at the girl's face under a +20 loup (which I have) there appears to be some slight blurring of the eyes, not evident without a high power loup. This would have happened when the piece was originally fired. Don't be put off, she is absolutely beautiful.
