Thanks Steven Saumya Batik painting on cotton...with measurements of 2.4 feet x 3.6 feet. (b492) Brilliant color masterfully detailed and is sure to be a welcome addition to any decor.

One of the most popular cults is that of the goddess Durga who is described in the Devi Mahatmaya as a powerful goddess created from the combined anger of several gods. Durga's primary purpose is to combat demons who threaten the stability of the cosmos. In this picture, Durga is represented as a golden coloured woman, with a gentle and beautiful countenance. She is armed with the principle weapons of the major gods which include the mace, the sword, the trident, the discus, the conch shell, a bow and an arrow and a lotus flower. She is wearing a red and green saree, depicting love, compassion and fertility. She is also wearing a rich crown over her long and dark tresses. Her long earrings and various strings of pearls make her more attractive. Behind her in yellow ochre is a magnificent lion, looking as gentle as the goddess herself. The hairy mane makes the king of beasts look more regal. The bright red and green colours of the Devi's attire stand prominently against the sober tones of the ochre animal and the mud brown background. In batik, we achieve a greater harmony of colour than in painting, due to the fact that each colour is dyed over the previous one and in this manner they become more closely related. (b490)
